Empire reports that well-loved comedian Eddit Murphy has signed on to play a more dramatic role than is his usual-- the title character in the upcoming Bruce Beresford-directed drama COOK. This will be Murphy's first non-comedic role since his part in Dreamgirls (2006), for which he received an Oscar nomination.

The storyline for 'Cook' involves a dying man who hires a cook (Murphy) to round up meals for his girlfriend and daughter after he's passed on. The film features a script by Susan McMartin (Californication). Filmmakers were originally eyeing Samuel L. Jackson for the role, but scheduling conflicts forced him to decline working on the project.

After Matthew McConaughey's triumphant turnaround from rom com star to 2014 Oscar winner, it seems Murphy too might be trying to make the switch into more serious filmmaking.

'Cook' is set to begin production next month. Additional casting is expected to be announced soon.
