The Egyptian-born Gormezano-Goren family will discuss Sephardi-Mizrahi histories in Israel and the U.S. with a reading, film screening, and discussion to celebrate the publication of Yitzhak Gormezano-Goren's "Alexandrian Summer" in English by New Vessel Press, and the premiere of Amit Goren's film "Alexandrian Summers Again and Forever." It all takes place at the Center for Jewish History on Sunday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m.

"Alexandrian Summer" is the first translation of Gormezano-Goren's acclaimed work into English. A key figure in Mizrahi culture in Israel, Gormezano-Goren has written numerous novels and plays, and founded the academic journal "Direction: Eastward." First published in 1979 in Hebrew, Alexandrian Summer became a milestone in Mizrahi literature and culture in Israel: it tells the story of two Jewish families living their frenzied last days in the cosmopolitan social whirl of Alexandria just before migrating to Israel in 1951. Gormezano Goren is a winner of the Ramat Gan Prize for Literature and received the Israeli Prime Minister's Prize for Literature in 2001.

Renowned filmmaker and NYU alum Amit Goren ("Year 66 was Good for Tourism") -- the son-in-law of Yitzhak Gormezano-Goren -- has created a new documentary especially for this event. The film documents the trip of the Gormezano-Goren family -- based both in Tel-Aviv and in LA -- back to Alexandria and is based on footage that Amit has had for years.

A post-screening discussion will feature Hannan Hever (Yale University) and Joyce Zonana (CUNY Graduate Center). Tickets: $10 general; $7 AJHS/CJH members/seniors; $5 students, FREE for NYU students (with ID). Link: http://cjh.org/event/2688.

Presented by the American Jewish Historical Society and the American Sephardi Federation in partnership with the Mizrahi Film Series, the Taub Center for Israel Studies, the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Department, the Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies, and the Center for Media and Religion, New York University.
