Competition Opens for Short Dance Film Proposals From India and the UK

As part of UK/India Year of Culture 2017, Big Dance in partnership with Little Dot Studios and the British Council have opened applications for four new film commissions of Big Dance Shorts for Channel 4, focusing on the creative relationship between the UK and India.

Proposals need to be in by Wednesday 3 May at 17.00 hrs

These new film commissions offer an exciting platform for new talent, encouraging collaborations between dance and film professionals, and demonstrating strong visual ideas with cinematic flair.

Winners will be announced in the week of 15 May, and the selected films will go into production between June and August 2017.

Each commission will be worth £4,000 with additional grants of up to £1,250 for international travel to help facilitate collaborations between UK and India.

The selected films will be shown online and may be chosen to be broadcast as part of Channel 4's Random Acts strand. The films will also be shown via social media platforms by Big Dance, the British Council, People Dancing and the Greater London Authority.

Random Acts is Channel 4's showcase of the very best creative shorts. Over each thirty-minute TV episode we are taken inside the minds of this generation's most original short film talent: from music to animation, dance to spoken word and anything visually random in between. As well as showcasing the best new talent from around Britain, the series also provides a creative platform for well-known actors, musicians and creators such as Riz Ahmed, Reggie Yates, Gemma Chan, Zawe Ashton, Ai Weiwei, Shia LaBeouf, Hudson Mohawke, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Tinie Tempah, Kate Tempest, Gillian Wearing, Kwes, Marina Abramovic, Simon Amstell, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Mike Skinner.


British Council
UK/India 2017 - is a season of cultural events, film screenings, exhibitions and activities taking place in both countries which will reflect our long and rich history and strengthen relationships at all levels of society. This programme will enable people in both countries to experience innovative and exciting creative work, to explore their joint history and to build deeper connections.

People Dancing, established in 1986, is the UK development organisation and membership body for community and participatory dance. With over 2,300 members - reaching 4,500 dance professionals world-wide - People Dancing works collaboratively with the broader dance sector, artists and organisations that enable people to take part in dance.
