Zach Sheets, accomplished composer, chamber musician and orchestral flutist, will debut his latest work, in clarion fields, at the Vermont Symphony Orchestra's Made in Vermont Statewide Tour. The Made in Vermont series kicks off on September 23rd continuing through September 30th.

Sheets, a Norwich-native, grew up in Vermont and began his musical studies through Vermont's "Music-COMP" program. He later went on to receive a B.A. in Music and French Literature from Harvard University and an M.M. and Performer's Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Now at just 25 years old Sheets has become a skillful musician and composer. As a performer, he currently serves as Principal Flute, LynDon Paul Lorusso Chair, of the Cape Symphony Orchestra, and as flutist and executive director of the [Switch~ Ensemble]. As a composer, Sheets' works have been performed by such groups as the Ensemble InterContemporain, the Talea Ensemble, the Callithumpian Consort, the Juventas New Music Ensemble, the Brattle Street Chamber Players, cellist Séverine Ballon, and many others. In the summer of 2015, he was featured in a performance of his own solo flute work, that colors the stone, at the Spoleto Festival USA, and completed a new work as part of the ManiFeste Festival at IRCAM in Paris. Sheets has also been n amed a recipient of the Wayne Brewster Barlow prize, the Belle S. Gitelman Award, the Bernard Rogers Prize, the John Green Award, and a Harvard University Artist Development Fellowship.

While Sheets boasts a worldly résumé, he likes to turn to his Vermont roots for inspiration. "In my music, I want to create space that enables mindfulness, much like the sensation I had often in my Vermont upbringing: a solitary human presence in a yet-unknown landscape, exploring the solitude with imagination and curiosity," Sheets says.

The Vermont Symphony Orchestra is excited to bring Sheets' in clarion fields to life for its world premiere. This year's Made in Vermont program will also feature Mozart's Divertimento No.11, Copland's Quiet City and principal guest conductor Anthony Princiotti's own arrangement of Borodin's String Quartet No. 2.
