Secretary Jewell to Commemorate 75th Anniversary of Marian Anderson's Concert at Lincoln Memorial, 4/9
On April 9, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will join the Washington Performing Arts Society and local high school and elementary school children on the plaza of the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate Marian Anderson's historic Easter Day concert in 1939.
The concert was arranged by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and then-Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow Anderson, one of the 20th Century's most accomplished singers, to perform at DAR Constitution Hall because she was African-American.
