Leonard Slatkin to Lead LA Phil in TCHAIKOVSKY SPECTACULAR at the Hollywood Bowl, 8/15-16

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's annual tradition at the Hollywood Bowl -Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks, will take place Friday and Saturday, August 15 and 16, at 8 pm. Conductor Leonard Slatkin leads the orchestra in an all-Tchaikovsky program, featuring Marche slave and selections from Swan Lake. The evening includes the Hollywood Bowl debut of young French violinist Alexandra Soumm performing Tchaikovsky's famous Violin Concerto, and concludes with the USC Trojan Marching Band, directed by Dr. Arthur C. Bartner, joining the orchestra to perform the thrilling 1812 Overture accompanied by cannons and a spectacular fireworks display.

Internationally acclaimed American conductor Leonard Slatkin began his appointment as Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in September of 2008. August of 2011 marked the start of his tenure as Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon, France. In addition, Slatkin continues to serve as Principal Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, a post that began in the fall of 2008. Following a 17-year tenure as Music Director of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Slatkin became Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. in 1996. Other positions in the United States have included Principal Guest Conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, where he founded their "Sommerfest"; first Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra's summer series at the Blossom Music Festival, a post he held for nine years; Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl for three seasons; and additional positions with the New Orleans Philharmonic and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.

French violinist Alexandra Soumm is a multi-faceted artist who is equally at home in concerto and chamber repertoire. Orchestras with which she has collaborated in recent years include the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony, National Philharmonic of Russia, Israel Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony and Tokyo Symphony. She made her debut in the U.S. in November 2013, working with the Detroit Symphony under Mo. Slatkin's baton. As a chamber musician, Soumm has given recitals at the Auditorium du Louvre (Paris), Palais des Beaux Arts (Brussels), Wigmore Hall (London), City of London Festival and Toppan Hall (Tokyo). She has also appeared at international festivals such as Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Deauville, Menton, Montpellier, St Denis, Strasbourg, Verbier and the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad. She is very involved with the Seiji Ozawa International Academy in Switzerland and has been taking part in the project for the past 10 years. Soumm enjoys an ongoing relationship with many leading orchestras in France. In addition to the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, she has also performed with the Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National d'Ile de France, Orchestre National de Lyon and Orchestre National de Montpellier. In the UK, she was a member of BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artist scheme 2010-12, during which time she worked with most of the BBC ensembles. She maintains her connection with the UK through her position as a London Music Masters awardee 2012-2015.

The USC Trojan Marching Band is known throughout the country as one of college football's most spirited and innovative bands, and around the world for its frequent appearances in Hollywood. Founded in 1880, the Trojan Marching Band (TMB) has been led by director Dr. Arthur C. Bartner for the past 44 years. Arriving at USC In 1970, Bartner revolutionized the band by introducing the distinctive "drive-it" style of marching and incorporating modern hits into its repertoire. Featuring over 300 passionate students from nearly every major at USC, the TMB is a prominent representative of the university with over 350 engagements each year. It has truly earned its nickname, "The Spirit of Troy," for its commitment to 'SC and its tireless support of Trojan athletics. During its summer vacations, the band stays busy, traveling the world as goodwill ambassadors for the university. The Spirit of Troy performed at the 50th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France; at the 2003 and 2004 International Chinese New Year's Parade in Hong Kong; on the Great Wall of China in 2004; in front of the Roman Colosseum in 2006 and on Rio de Janeiro's Ipanema Beach in 2008. The band has also had the privilege of performing at five World Expositions in Australia (1988), Spain (1992), Portugal (1998), Japan (2005) and, most recently, at China's Expo 2010. In 2012, the band visited London for a pre-Olympics concert tour.
