Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra Opens Season with Tchaikovsky This Weekend

Indulge yourself with this intoxicating program from Russia and the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's seeason opener this weekend, November 8 and 9. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, op. 23 in B-flat minor sits at the top of the concerto repertory, and guest pianist Angelo Rondello will dazzle audiences with his energy and technical flair. Vasily Kalinnikov's life was cut short by illness but not before he wrote his magnificent Symphony No. 1 in G minor. If you are a fan of Tchaikovsky's symphonies then you will love this hidden jewel from the Russian repertory. Dmitri Shostakovich's Festive Overture will open the program with rousing brass fanfares and spectacular color.

Pianist Angelo Rondello has been described as "fascinating, enthralling, magnetic..." (The Philippine Star) and "a true tour-de-force such as not often encountered." (Classical Voice of North Carolina). Rondello gave his New York debut in the Trinity/St. Paul Concert Series, and has performed throughout the US and in Southeast Asia as a pianist and teacher. A native of Bellingham, WA, Rondello began studying music at age five, and by his early teens, he was concertizing regularly.

Music Director of the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Festival Orchestra and the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra, Maestro Wesley Schulz has been lauded by musicians for his "intensity and emotion" in performances and for his "approachable and inspiring" leadership. This fall, he also assumes the new post of Conducting Fellow at the Seattle Symphony with Music Director Ludovic Morlot. Passionate about the November program, and eager to launch the BSO's 2014 - 2015 Season, Wesley says, "We wanted to kick-off the symphony season in spectacular fashion, so I chose some of the greatest music to emerge from Russia over the last century."

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's opening concerts of the season are November 8 and 9, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m., with a pre-concert chat on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. Tickets, $19 for adults, and $16 for seniors, students, military, and teachers may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206.842.8569 or in person at Bainbridge Performing Arts (BPA), 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island. Under BPA's Youth in Music Initiative generously sponsored by Wicklund Dental, each youth receives free admission when accompanied by a paying adult. BPA Box Office hours are 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and one hour prior to each performance.
