According to WebMD, children between the ages of 11 to 14 experience changes in their cognitive, emotional and social development that can affect the decisions they make.

Victor Joseph Cino knows firsthand the importance of making the correct choices during this crucial time. In his novel, "Little Gangster," Cino illustrates the way decisions made in adolescence have outcomes that can last a lifetime.

Cino grew up in Manhattan at a time when various gangsters influenced the city. As a 12-year-old, he worked for gangsters before accepting a scholarship to prep school in New England from The Boys' Club of New York. His involvement with the club had a profound influence on him. He later attended Colgate University and earned his Master of Arts in English and American literature from New York University. Cino also taught English for five years at the Collegiate School in New York City. In "Little Gangster", he examines his decisions through the eyes of the main character Joey D'Angelo.

"I sought to portray my early years as a young boy subject to life on the lower east side of Manhattan in the early 1950s," Cino said. "My choices, challenges and decisions are depicted in this novel."

By sharing his personal story, Cino aims to assist young men from disadvantaged neighborhoods and help them in their transition into adulthood.

"I wanted to help teach young boys to become moral, upright young men and to learn to become responsible individuals for themselves and to society in general," Cino said.
