RENO, Nev.

Over 9 million U.S. military personnel served on active duty during the Vietnam War and thousands of those brave souls went missing in action to never be heard from again.

Vernon Harris has worked as an international military specialist and spent a substantial time with a number of military members listening to their harrowing tales while seeing the toll such loss has on family members.

Harris' new novel, "Dark Side of the Looking Glass," explores the struggle of brothers when one goes missing in Vietnam. Rather than take the usual route of focusing on the horrors of war in the vein of movies like "Apocalypse Now," Harris wants to focus on the bonds of the people in the military and the immense struggle family members face when their loved ones go MIA.

"We see the atrocities of war on television every day," Harris said. "The children, brothers, sisters and parents left with questions and constant worry are often misunderstood or worse yet, completely ignored."

To approach a younger generation unfamiliar with some of the heartbreak Vietnam caused, Harris has added a fantasy element to his novel. The protagonist, Sam Michael, slips into a coma and is sent reeling into an alternate universe where he must survive as a soldier with no previous experience in Vietnam. Sam searches for his brother while trying to complete a mission he does not fully understand.
