GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ By the time she was 44, Robyn Dykstra had been widowed twice, losing both husbands in a four-year period. One suffered a fatal heart attack at home, leaving her with two young sons to raise; the second died in the crash of a small private plane he was piloting. Without meaning to, Dykstra became an expert on widowhood

"I wouldn't wish the pain I felt on my worst enemy," she says. "It felt like a cannonball-sized hole had been blown right through the center of me, and I couldn't understand why I was still upright and taking oxygen. I wanted everything to stop for a moment so I could get my footing. I was sure I could feel the earth spinning under me."

In her new memoir, The Widow Wore Pink: A True Story of Life After Loss and the Transforming Power of a Loving God (Release date: Sept. 9, 2015), Dykstra candidly talks about life both good and bad after losing a spouse. She also shares some of the hurtful things well-intentioned people said to her during this period.

She recalls being asked:

  • How can you carry on?
  • You seem so happy, did you really love him?
  • Are you losing weight to attract a new husband?
  • Do you think he'd approve of the way you're changing his house?

Now, 13 years into another marriage, Dykstra wants to share her survival story with other women coping with the loss of their men. A powerful, down-to-earth and often humorous storyteller, Dykstra can discuss:

  • Grieving is as individual as your mama's chili.
  • Why she refused to wear black.
  • The lousy tradeoffs of being a widow.
  • What friends can do to help widows they know.
