Author Gary Matheny began considering the life of a bullet after watching a program on running guns and ammunition. His new novel, "The Bullet: The Intriguing Story of a Bullet and its Travel Through Time" (published by Balboa Press), follows the life of a bullet.

Matheny takes a .45 caliber bullet that is issued prior to World War II and follows it through four generations. The bullet captures the lives of the people it comes in contact with. It sees war, destruction, pain, good times and hard times as it travels in and out of the lives of five people that possess it. The unique way the bullet is handed down will encourage readers to continue and not put the book down. The book covers three wars because of the generations it passes through, but the heartwarming story of the people that it meets work to warm the soul and leave readers wanting a sequel.

An excerpt from ''The Bullet':

"He opened his hand and showed Luis the .45 caliber bullet and said, Mr. Benson, my friend, gave it to me before I left for Vietnam. He told me the story of how this bullet was carried into battle by two brave soldiers through two wars before me. He told me to carry it proudly everywhere I went and know that it would protect me and bring me home. I did, and I got back to North Carolina alive. This bullet is special, a piece of history that cannot be
replaced, and now I want to pass it along to you, to protect you."
