A young skater tries to follow in her mother's footsteps in author Stasia Xu's new young-adult novel, "Vyria and Her Acrobatic Skating Team" (published by iUniverse).

Having a mother who was a world champion skater, Vyria feels pressure to succeed in the figure skating world. She soon discovers, though, that she might not have the ability to thrive as her mother did. That's when Vyria gets the idea to create a bold new twist on skating by combining acrobatics with elegant movement on the ice. This might just be the secret she needs to beat her rival and make her mother proud. With this debut novel, Xu hopes to show readers how one's talents and hobbies can lead to self-discovery.

"From time to time, many of us are trying to discover ourselves, our talents, our hobby, what we want to achieve in life, what makes us happy," Xu says. "A story about discovering one's happiness is always relevant, in my opinion."

An excerpt from "Vyria and Her Acrobatic Skating Team":

"'For safety reason, each one of us should wear a helmet, gloves, and knee bands when we practice, because we will be practicing acrobatics, and some acrobatic moves are quite dangerous. And also, if we plan to jump higher, or fly with a rope, then we definitely need to think about more safety measures,' says John. 'I agree. I'll write that down,' Vyria affirms. They spend the whole Saturday evening talking about the future acts of their team. When they finally have to go home, everybody feels reluctant to go. They have fallen in love with the idea of their new acrobatic skating team."
