Author Sharon Bise offers parents and children a new resource for coping with the anxieties about the first day of kindergarten in her latest children's book, "Jay's First Day at School" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"My co-worker had a son, Jay, who was beginning kindergarten and was frightened about taking this big step into the unknown," Bise explains. "I wrote the book hoping to remove his fears, and to help him see that kindergarten could be a positive, happy experience."

In the book, Jay is starting kindergarten at St. Mary's, a parochial school located in East Los Angeles. He's nervous and has all kinds of questions for his mother, like whether or not he'll be able to take a nap, if she'll remember to pick him up, if he has to go again after the first day and whether or not his teacher is nice.

The book answers all of Jay's questions and more. His teacher turns out to be very nice, and so are his classmates. A wide variety of races, body sizes and hair colors are represented. Girls and boys play well together and Bise avoids stereotyping and discrimination. Ultimately, "Jay's First Day at School" shows that although new schools experiences can be frightening at first, they can also be positive and fun.
