Robert J. Cerfolio, a world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon known as the "Michael Jordan of lung surgery," explains in his new book, "Super Performing At Work and At Home: The Athleticism of Surgery and Life," how to be the go-to person in life and why there is usually no such thing as a "no-win" situation for success-minded individuals.

"I have benefited from the specific, concrete techniques that work both for individuals and teams - in sports and in a work environment - and they're a sharp contrast to the defeatist mindset that seems to be a dominant force in the lives of so many," says Cerfolio, who has performed more than 15,700 operations, delivered more than 300 visiting professor lectures worldwide, and has been, in many ways, the go-to person in life for those closest to him.

"Super performers, for example, really care about their jobs. They are hyper-vigilant, have backup systems and have fun throughout the working process. Also, the importance of family is nonnegotiable for being a go-to person in life; family members are the players that you have on your team for life."

In reviewing his rise from a surgical resident at the Mayo Clinic to the recognized world authority in chest and robotic thoracic surgery, to how he coped with the unthinkable when he learned that his cherished wife, Lorraine, was diagnosed with breast cancer - and how that affected the couple's three sons - Cerfolio humbly presents his journey of living out the principles of being a go-to person in life.

"Few surgeons in the world embody the fusion of athleticism, leadership, and surgical skill that is present in Robert Cerfolio. This book is a must-read for all surgeons, athletes, coaches, and professional and team leaders!" writes Jeffery P. Jacobs, MD, FACS, FACC, FCCP, Professor of Cardiac Surgery (PAR), Johns Hopkins University

"Dr. Cerfolio is at the pinnacle of our specialty nationally and internationally. This book represents a rare opportunity to see what motivates such a successful person professionally and personally," writes Richard K. Freeman, MD, MBA, Vice Chair, Department of Surgery, St. Vincent Hospital and Health System
