SOUTHFIELD, Mich.

Harry Anderson Jr. adds to his collection of publications that reflect on race relations of the 1960s and 70s with his new book, "Sandra's Saga Matthew's World: A Story of a Bi-Racial Family" (published by AuthorHouse).

Sandra is a young, white coed who falls in love with an Air Force pilot named Matthew. Before Matthew is sent to the Vietnam War, they get married and conceive a child. Though it's believed Matthew is killed in action, Sandra holds on believing he's still alive while raising their son, Matthew Jr.

When Matthew returns home by surprise, their family starts to grow, and by 1978, Matthew Jr. is 11 and has several siblings. Matthew Jr. has to deal with the challenges that seem to come inherently due to his biracial makeup, but more importantly he helps a girl he has a crush on to survive the hate that seems to surround her on all sides due to her own mixed race heritage.

Anderson hopes his story of a family built on love and understanding will help readers learn to accept people as they are.

"We're all mixed with something and there's nothing we can do about it," Anderson says. "Race, size, appearance and backgrounds may make people look different on the outside, but we're actually the same."
