Prof. Wiz Announces THE OUGHT

ROANOKE, Va

Ned Wisnefske was preparing for a talk on moral education, and he was thinking that morality is all about the 'ought.' Then it occurred to him that 'the ought' sounded like a character in a Dr. Seuss book. Dr. Seuss imparted moral insight in his books, and Wisnefske thought that he should try to do the same thing in a picture-story book for teenagers.

"The Ought" (published by Xlibris) is written for young adults who wonder where morals come from and whether we just make them up. It is an ethical quest to answer the questions, what is morality? and where does it come from? Intriguingly illustrated, it brings these ethical questions to light.

"This book is relevant today because young people are skeptical about morality. High schools, colleges and universities have trouble with cheating, bullying and moral disruptive behavior. This little book seeks to get to the heart of morality in a short, thoughtful and intriguingly illustrated work," says the author.

"We all experience the 'ought', or the sense of moral responsibility. We do not always like it and we even try to flee from it. This book captures that experience. It also points out how we try to shape moral responsibility to our own wishes instead of being formed by a sense of obligation and duty to others. In the end, we learn the 'ought' is nothing scary and nothing to be avoided, but rather embraced because it comes from our own moral nature," he adds.

Ned Wisnefske teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Roanoke College where he is Schumann professor of Lutheran theology. His most recent book is "God Hides," a critique of religion and a primer for faith.
