New Children's Reading Lists are Released for Summer

Getting kids to read over the summer break is frequently no easy task. It can be challenging to find books that appeal to a child's interests and that also match the appropriate reading level, especially for young, emerging readers. As we move into the hot summer months, teachers and parents will be pleased to know that the August House editorial staff has just released an extensive collection of reading lists that have been carefully curated and organized by themes, cultures, and holidays along with specific Guided Reading Levels and Lexile Reading Measures for each book.

These reading lists were completed just in time for summer and can be downloaded from the Learning Resources section of the August House website. The new reading lists cover a wide range of topics including: Diverse and Multicultural titles, African-American Stories for Kids, Latino and Hispanic books for Kids, Scary Stories, Cooking and Food books for Kids, Storytelling Resources and Activities and more.

With so many distractions and things to do over the summer, children often resist participating in supplemental learning activities. Unfortunately, the lack of active reading over the summer months, however, may have serious and measurable consequences, especially in maintaining reading skills that were developed during the last school year. Kids that don't read consistently during the summer months may experience a lapse of two months' worth of reading skills progress. Note that's a lapse, not solely a lack of development, and it can lead to serious gaps in skills across other subjects.

Steve Floyd, President of August House, pointed out that "these new reading lists were developed to make it easier for educators and parents to find a diverse range of books that are not only rich in language nutrition but also appeal to the natural curiosity of children from kindergarten through middle school. With these new reading lists, it's never been easier to find books that match a range of interests and reading levels for any child."

If an educator or parent can't find stories their kids will enjoy in one of the new reading lists, they can also use the August House Book Finder to search by author, region, genre, grade level and character traits. The Book Finder is also available on the August House website. These two unique resources combine to make it easier for anyone to find just the right book for any child whether it's a picture book, scary stories collection, assortment of folktales or a resource book.
