New Book Imparts Wisdom of 'The Wise Men of Pizzo'

The story is set in a little town in the Southern coast of Italy and it is presented through the eye of an immigrant returning home for a fortnight from the Americas, with the intent of taking a break from customary life and reorganizing his thoughts around lifelong problems with his wife. There, old memories emerge and blend with the current life of the town.

During his stay, the visitor learns from a group of wise old men that a friend of his youth has died after conducting a dissipated life. The old men also represent the heart of the little village with their provincial wisdom. Eventually, the main character solves none of the problems he meant to address but he gains a new prospective by experiencing their inconsequence from the distant and enchanted world of memories and friendship inspired by "The Wise Men of Pizzo."

The book is inspired by today's society and its pace that is disproportional to man's emotional needs and discourages meditative moments. It draws readers who are looking for relief from customary life but cannot afford journeys to exotic places and who miss the language skills to communicate with other cultures. It demonstrates that peaceful self-awareness is achievable in the docile acceptance of the natural pace of life that can be uniquely found in little provincial towns.

About the Author
Francesco M Marincola is the Chief Research Officer of Sidra Medical and Research Centre in Doha, Qatar. He was previously a tenured senior investigator at the U.S. National Institute of Health. He is president of the Society for the Immunotherapy of Cancer and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Translational Medicine. He received his MD summa cum laude from the University of Milan and surgery training from Stanford University. His scientific work deepened the understanding of the mechanisms leading to rejection of tumours or transplanted organs by the immune system and development of autoimmunity. This is his first non-scientific publication.
