Hemenway Stephens, author of "The Summoning," has been a theatre artist for thirty years. The hope and heartbreak of the profession inspired her second novel, "Nathan", where a toy elephant recounts his adventures after being bought by an acting teacher and director at a New York City flea market in 1995.

Morgan Johansson has lived a private life of guarded intimacy until his world is turned upside down by his impulsive acquisition of a toy elephant. Nathan, who was made in 1950 and then stored in an attic for many years, has a thorough exuberance for his new life and respectful affection for everyone he meets, none of whom find it unusual to be interacting with a toy elephant. His enthusiasm catapults Morgan and himself into one adventure after another until they suddenly find themselves on the board of a fledgling New York theatre company whose future seems precarious at best. Morgan and Nathan's adventures lead to a new future, where love and endless creativity seem certain.

Nathan celebrates that one impulse that will change your life forever.
