Marco is from Jamaica. At the young age of 12, he is uprooted from his homeland to live with his parents on Strawberry Island, off the coast of Maine. Back home, he had friends and many relatives; but it seems like he is not welcome in Maine, his new home. Bullied and avoided, he feels terribly alone. But all that changes when he is befriended by Jacob, an old lobster fisherman who teaches him how to use his boat and tells him about his many journeys to different parts of the world, including Jamaica. Jacob and Marco become friends despite their age difference. Later Marco finds Flanders, a new friend who defends him from the bullies.

A delightful tale that speaks volumes about the struggles of a young man who braves the odds of a harsh world, "The Islanders" is a tale of true friendship that transcends the differences of age and life experience. It also relates to socially relevant issues of today such as immigration and racism told to young readers in a way they can easily grasp and understand.

About the Author
Nancy Garfield Woodbridge authored the picture storybooks "The Tuesday Elephant" and "The Dancing Monkey." She also directed several projects for Girl Scouts of the USA: "Worlds to Explore," "A Handbook for Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts," "Careers to Explore" and "From Dreams to Reality, a Career Education Program," as well as "Juvenile Justice." On scholarship, she received a BA in literature from Bennington College in Vermont. She graduated with an MS in education from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. Nancy Garfield Woodbridge has been writing since she first held a pen at age 8 when she wrote her first novel. She has recently published "A Bouquet of Fairy Tales," "Hilary and the Secret Skulls," "Poems in Exile," "Stories from Around the World" and "More Stories from Around the World." "Arctic Butterfly" and "Suns of Darkness" will be published in 2015.
