Is it really possible for humanity to live harmoniously amidst so many cultural and racial differences? How do these issues affect individuals, especially children? Can children be taught to understand and cope with the many human differences they encounter? In her newest children's book, author Nancy Garfield Woodbridge explores these questions through the story of "The Islanders" (published by Xlibris).

Marco is from Jamaica. At the young age of 12, he is uprooted from his homeland to live with his parents on Strawberry Island, off the coast of Maine. Back home, he had friends and many relatives; but it seems like he is not welcome in Maine, his new home. Bullied and avoided, he feels terribly alone. But all that changes when he is befriended by Jacob, an old lobster fisherman who teaches him how to use his boat and tells him about his many journeys to different parts of the world, including Jamaica. Jacob and Marco become friends despite their age difference. Later Marco finds Flanders, a new friend who defends him from the bullies.

A delightful tale that speaks volumes about the struggles of a young man who braves the odds of a harsh world, "The Islanders" is a tale of true friendship that transcends the differences of age and life experience. It also relates to socially relevant issues of today such as immigration and racism told to young readers in a way they can easily grasp and understand.

Suspense fills the narrative as Marco discovers one day that Jacob is missing. Marco launches a boat into a winter storm in a desperate search to find Jacob. Subtly honest yet powerfully insightful, this book offers wisdom and entertainment for young and old readers everywhere.
