CHARLESTON, S.C.

Amy Fletcher is a psychic-medium and freelance journalist who has been seeing spirits since she was 4 years old. When she travels across the country to rid a nursing home of a ghostly haunting, she unwittingly becomes entangled in a web of spiritual intrigue, deceptive romance and attempted murder.

The 2013 book "Only a Ghost Knows" (published by Trafford Publishing) by Mary Elizabeth Sheffield tells the tale of this young psychic-medium's journey to understanding the spirit world. And this year, Sheffield aims to reach a wider audience for her book with a new marketing campaign and a submission to the U.S. Review of Books.

"Only a Ghost Knows" follows Amy to the Dandelion Care Home, where her best friend, Becky, works as a nurse. The nursing home plays center stage to various haunts, including lonesome wails coming through the walls, flickering lights and mysterious music playing late at night. Dorothy Green, who owns the building, is the book's self-centered antagonist who will do anything for money, even selling the nursing home. But what Dorothy doesn't realize is that every action has a consequence and her selfish motivations may not earn her the riches she so desires.

"Everyone is into the paranormal - the unknown - because it is a great way to escape our world and be enchanted into another," Sheffield says. "But I've found that a lot of these books tend to frighten people of what they do not understand. My book tries to completely belay those fears and let the reader know that nothing about this is scary. Only the unknown is scary and my book will allow the reader to see things firsthand from a psychic's point of view."
