WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. - Marian Burmeff invites children to learn about short vowel sounds in her colorful new children's book, "How the Short Vowel Club Got Started" (published by Trafford Publishing).

The book's main characters are vowels A, E, I, O and U. They are known as Anthony, Ethel, Ignatius, Olive and Umbert. Anthony decides to start his own club and convinces the others to join. Each letter picks a specific word - avocado, eggshell, indigo, opulent and umber - that uses the "short vowel" sound.

An excerpt from "How the Short Vowel Club Got Started":

"Anthony enjoyed his new sound so much that he decided to change one more thing. He wanted a new favorite color. Anthony was determined to make his new color unique. He chose, Amazing Avocado."

Burmeff believes that her book offers more than just a lesson about vowels. "It promotes tolerance and individuality and respects each letter as its unique self," she explains. "They help each other find their sounds and encourage each letter to become unique. No one bullies one letter for being different."
