Lyceum Books, Inc., publisher of professional development and educational resources for social work practitioners and educators, announces the publication of Working with Homeless and Vulnerable People: Basic Skills and Practice by innovative educator and human service professional Jeannette Waegemakers Schiff, associate professor of social work at the University of Calgary.

"The main aim of this book is to provide frontline social service workers, and those who are beginning work in this area, with the fundamental information to provide competent and consumer-driven help to persons who are homeless or at imminent risk of losing housing. To this end, [this book provides] an examination of the multiple personal and social service components required to adequately address their needs," says Waegemakers Schiff.

According to point-in-time reports conducted for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, on a given night in January of 2014 in the US, there were 578,424 people experiencing homelessness. Of that number, 216,197 are people in families, and 362,163 are individuals. About 15 percent of the homeless population - 84,291 - are considered "chronically homeless" individuals, who as a result face an increased risk of life-threatening medical conditions such as disease, debilitating behavioral health conditions, and substance use. About 9 percent of these homeless people - 49,933 - are veterans.

Working with Homeless and Vulnerable People uses a practice-based and practice-oriented approach to both examine these conditions of life for the homeless and the complex systems of care, which allows for immediate practical use in work settings. Professionals in various areas will be able to collaborate to provide successful interventions and strategies for sustainability.

Waegemakers Schiff emphasizes establishing helping relationships, and working together toward a plan for stabilization, but also recognizes the importance of self care and resiliency of frontline workers. She provides reflexive exercises aimed at decreasing stress and burnout of workers in direct service agencies, outreach services providers, and other organizations who routinely engage with homeless and vulnerable people.
