YACKANDANDAH, Australia

Author Lorraine Wheeldon has been writing short stories for some time, but it was when she started incorporating poetry into her works that everything just fell into place. "Licorice IceCream" (published by Xlibris AU) is her first foray into publishing her works. The book's title and its central theme were inspired by her friends who make licorice ice cream from natural and authentic ingredients, her works endeavoring to reflect those very same characteristics.

As a doctor, Wheeldon's profession allowed her to work all over the world and she did so, having travelled from her native Australia to live and work both in South Africa and Ireland as well as spent extended periods in the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States and Germany. Her work and travels has allowed her to meet many people from all walks of life. In "Licorice IceCream," she dips into the rich tapestry of her experiences to weave a simple, but not simplistic, collection of short stories and poetry.

"Licorice IceCream" is a work in five parts: "Naturally," "Personally," "Intimately," "Exactly" and "Finally". Because she lives in a rural village, Wheeldon starts it off in "Naturally" where she depicts many scenes from nature. "Personally" relate her many observations about people and circumstances in different ways while "Intimately" cuts close to the bone on the same subjects. "Exactly" moves to more commonplace events and "Finally" wraps up the collection.

Wheeldon writes of ordinary people living ordinary lives in an ordinary world and the simplicity with which she crafts her words are an effort to keep her art grounded to this reality. The result, as seen in "Licorice IceCream" is a down-to-earth, if evocative, collection of verse and prose that, true to her inspiration, is natural and authentic.
