Although they are a source of nightmares for children, monsters have frequently been portrayed as loving creatures in pop culture. For instance, the TV shows "Aaahh! Real Monsters" and "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends," and the movies "Monsters, Inc." and "My Neighbor Totoro" all feature friendly monsters. In his new book, "The Taming of the Halloween Monsters" (published by Trafford Publishing) by the author penned Kaspee, monsters are terrorizing the inhabitants of the world, and it is up to the night creatures, raccoon, cat, skunk, bat, owl and spider, to save their friends. But they succeed against all odds, and in doing so they convert the monsters into loving friends.

Kaspee introduces children to a wider variety of words than are normally in early reading books. She uses rhyme to grab the interest of young readers while aiding in their reading development skills and memory retention.

"The Taming of the Halloween Monsters" emphasizes the importance of planning, courage and commitment to friends, along with a number of other positive values young children should know are relevant in today's society. Pennington combines suspense with ingenious planning and courage by creatures many of whom are often disliked in the everyday world we live in.

"I hope children develop an early love of words and poetry," Kaspee says. "Also, I hope the actions and values demonstrated by the main characters provide a positive influence for children."
