OCALA, Fla.

Retired registered nurse Carol A. Miele's Stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis was a game-changer. Despite having yearly mammograms and a breast biopsy in 2009, her terminal cancer went undetected until its discovery in 2010.

In "Kicking Cancer to the Curb," Miele shares her personal experiences after her diagnosis and stories of defining moments from her youth that helped shape her into the strong person she is today.

Through telling her story, Miele hopes to inform, inspire and encourage readers who receive terminal cancer diagnoses to fully live out the rest of their days, as well as provide support for terminal cancer patients' families, loved ones and caretakers.

"After receiving my diagnosis, I learned many things I wish I had known before," Miele said. "I want to impart whatever information, support or approaches I have learned to pave the path for others to make their journey less burdensome."

Miele also highlights the flaws in the healthcare system, including the lack of comprehensive care for women with dense breast tissue, the inefficiencies of health insurance in making cancer treatments affordable and the political motivations of certain entities in the cancer industry and FDA who take actions that delay or divert cancer research and clinical trials on new drugs or treatments.

"I am frankly disappointed in the research, medical and non-profit communities who have yet to find a cure despite billions of dollars donated and spent," Miele said.

About the Author
Carol A. Miele is a retired registered nurse of 45 years. She has a bachelor's and master's degree in public health. She was previously President of Lackawanna County District Nurses Association of the Pennsylvania Nurses Association. She enjoys the creative arts, writing and painting, as well as spending time with her husband, family, friends and pet dog, Flora. She has two daughters and four grandchildren. Carol has also published "Metastatic Madness," which recounts her initial experiences after the diagnosis of her metastatic cancer.
