Organized crime ran rampant throughout the United States during Prohibition, and California was no exception.

In their new book, "The Truth Won't Help Them Now," authors Joan Hunter and Steven Cobos take readers on a unique and intriguing murder mystery that highlights the corruption of Los Angeles in 1939.

The fast-paced plot features two separate crimes brought on by gambling, corruption, and gangs. A gritty district attorney and a band of detectives are on the quest to solve these crimes as money, power, and fame become motivating factors that eventually lead to blackmail and murder in a twisting thriller inspired by noir fiction of the past.

"I think the atmosphere and mysticism within the book will resonate with readers - especially those who are long-time residents of the Los Angeles area," Hunter said.

With the motivation to leave something of themselves for posterity, the authors, a mother-son duo, fulfilled a life long dream of writing a book with "The Truth Won't Help Them Now." They worked to ensure each aspect of the history within the book was accurate by obtaining maps and newspaper articles from the time and interviewing those who lived through the era. They also drew on their personal educational backgrounds to research and round out the story.

"We had a great time inventing little tricks to keep the action going," Hunter said. "We know that mystery readers will enjoy our inventiveness and surprises."
