LEXINGTON, Ky.

Even though Dad manages a golf course, young Sam doesn't know the rules of golf. Normally that's not a problem because, as this new children's book explains, Sam and Sam's best friend Max just pal around on the putting green. Dad needs someone to play in a golf tournament, however, and he asks Sam to learn the rules by the end of the week so the tournament won't be short a player. With help from some special new friends, Sam soon knows how to play the game and be a courteous player.

"Sam Learns Golf: A Children's Book of Basic Golf Rules, Terms, and Etiquette" describes the rules of golfing as well as terms such as bunker, sand trap and birdie. Sam finds out there is more to playing golf than just hitting a ball far and straight. The youth also learns that golfers should be considerate of others on the course by not taking too long, fixing ball marks on the green and raking sand traps, and being quiet - especially when someone is about to hit the ball. Just as important is the honor code, which means honestly reporting all shots even when no one is around to see.

Artistic, colorful, cartoon illustrations and diagrams showing different golf-related terms pair nicely with the informative and creative story. The author's imaginative side shows through with characters like talking golf balls, who not only share the wisdom they've learned during their years on the golf course but also agree to let Sam use them during the round.

Author Jason Beisel has been a high school teacher for more than 10 years. Beisel, who has an English degree from Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., learned to love golf from his father, grandfather and uncles, playing the game since he was a young boy. He gained further experience working on golf courses in the southern New Jersey area, where he was born and raised. He and his wife, Amy, have two children and live in Lexington.
Illustrator Jennifer Llewellyn attended VanArts in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, although she has created art since she was a small child. She has worked on animation, game and illustration projects and now lives in Chestermere, Alberta, Canada.
