Saad Amanullah Khan, ex-CEO of Gillette Pakistan and former president of the American Business Council of Pakistan, knows what it takes to run a successful company.

Khan has learned many hard-won lessons throughout his career from his time as an executive at a large international company as well as his experience as the founder of a small start-up. He shares his insights in his new book, "It's Business, It's Personal."

"People trying to strengthen their business vision often need a little guidance from someone who's done it before," Khan said. "This is a useful handbook for start-ups and entrepreneurs looking to develop tactics for strategy formulation and delivery."

Khan looks at businesses as pieces of art. He considers the idea of "direction setting," the origination of the company goals, as the rough sketch: important, but incomplete. The more complex work comes in the form of "organizational excellence": the coloring and shading of company culture created by the establishing of leadership and values.

"Direction setting and organizational excellence create a formidable combination in today's highly competitive business environment," Khan said. "Nothing substantial can ever be delivered if either piece is missing. Both must be fully developed in order to create a masterpiece."
