In his short story collection, "Broken Glass and Other Stories" (published by iUniverse), author Herbert Spohn asks readers to examine the situations in life that make them question their sense of self. To bring new awareness to his book, Spohn is rolling out a revived marketing campaign in 2013.

Spohn tackles many different scenarios in his book of short stories. The title story, "Broken Glass," features a homeless man who is seeking to recover the image of his wife, who was horribly disfigured and killed in an automobile accident. "Becoming an American" follows an immigrant youth who gains both citizenship and maturity in World War II.

Spohn says, "I wanted to use the freedom of imagination to render in fiction certain critical life experiences exemplified by the story titled 'Leaving the Father Land' and 'David Shore PhD' and to stretch my imagination by dealing with unusual psychological states such as 'Hyperempathy' as well as extraordinary love and dedication in 'Broken Glass.'"

An excerpt from "Broken Glass and Other Stories":

"'I'm not what you think. I'm not like the other homeless people. I don't collect garbage or junk. I use the glass to make something. It's not finished. I've been working on it for a long time. I'm afraid they're going to take it away from me before I'm finished.'"

"'Who are "they"? And why would they want to take it away from you?'"

"'There are always people who want to destroy something that's good, that matters to you.'"
