"The Complete Guide to Self-Management of Depression: Practical and Proven Methods" (published by Archway Publishing) is a comprehensive book geared towards people with depression that uses a self-management approach to treat depression.

Author Harpreet S. Duggal, MD, FAPA says the book broadens the narrow perspective of self-help beyond the traditional treatment of symptoms to self-management of depression. Self-management, besides a focus on treating symptoms, also addresses lifestyle changes, social relationships, communication, problem-solving and wellness.

"Depression is a very common illness and more and more people are accepting the diagnosis of depression and moving beyond the perceived stigma attached with mental illnesses in general," Duggal says. "Treatment of depression extends beyond just treatment with medications. In this context, the self-management paradigm puts one in the driver's seat and empowers them to pick and choose treatment options that are effective and in line with their values and preferences."
