Teaching dual language learners (DLLs) is a growing demand among early childhood educators who need to learn practical, proven strategies to reach these students. Grounded in research and strengthened by the author's personal experience as a student learning English, Connecting Right from the Start: Fostering Effective Communication with Dual Language Learners helps teachers understand the culturally and linguistically diverse children in their classrooms, as well as those with disabilities.

The book, written by Jennifer J. Chen, EdD, explains the stages of second-language acquisition and shows teachers how to make DLLs feel more comfortable in the classroom. Additionally, the book addresses the important task of involving families in school activities, a connection that greatly benefits a child's school success. Chen also outlines ways to challenge DLLs without overwhelming them.

"I still have vivid memories of being a student struggling to learn English in an American classroom," Chen said. "Without the proper support, many dual language learners fall behind their peers, setting them at a disadvantage as they move through the school system. This book allows me to pull from best practices and years of scientific research on how dual language learners can best succeed in early childhood classrooms."

Connecting Right from the Start will be released in July 2016 from Gryphon House, Inc., the leading publisher of educational resources for teachers.
