Preston, Conn.

Author Roger Zotti grew up in the city of New Haven in the 1950s. His teenage years were marked by his passion for his favorite boxers, ardently following their careers. Now, in "Friday Night World," he talks about the world of boxing, his teen years, and more.

Paying tribute to the famous and lesser known boxers in the 1950s, Zotti paints their images with his words, showing what all of them have in common: they are all courageous athletes. At the same time, the book is a memoir about growing up in New Haven during the fifties era. Readers will also be treated to reviews of books about boxing by Joyce Carol Oates, George Plimpton, Richard Kaletsky, Budd Schulberg, and others as well as personal essays about the sweet science. Written from a very personal point of view, this book is about a different time and place - when boxers were consummate warriors, didn't fight for money, had lives outside the ring, and were often very colorful personalities.

Writing with a clear and concise narrative, Zotti's passion for boxing and his beloved teenage heroes jump off every page. Entertaining in its in-depth look into the world of boxing and beyond, this book is perfect for boxing enthusiasts as well as sports columnists serving the sport.
