KALAMAZOO, Mich. -

A fifth-grader obsessed with weather is much more interested in what he sees outside the window than inside his classroom, especially when the subject's geography. This new young adult novel shares what happens when Michael and his grandfather build a weather experiment from spare parts. Lightning strikes the invention, and suddenly Michael can control the weather. His excitement turns to dismay, however, when things begin to get out of hand.

Michael, whose unusual hobby isolates him from his classmates, eagerly embraces his teacher's solution to help him be more confident when speaking in front of other students: class meteorologist. He enlists his grandfather to help build a weather experiment, but they have no idea that one of the spare parts has a curse attached. He and his friend, Ann, a new student, keep the invention secret at first, but when the machine causes a major hurricane to form on Lake Michigan and other weather conditions escalate, they must work together to ensure a disaster doesn't strike.

"Michael's Amazing Weather Machine" creates a rollercoaster ride of a story that entertains young readers while it teaches them about the science and history of weather and weather prediction. An ancient shaman, a cat named Doppler and military personnel all play a role in this unforgettable trip into the eye of a storm.

This is the debut novel for author Tim Nemeth, a South Bend, Ind., native who works as a scientist and writes in his spare time. He and his wife, Sara, live in Kalamazoo. Nemeth is already working on his next adventure for Michael.
