Between World War I and II, Czechoslovakia became one of the most prosperous and politically stable states in Eastern Europe. However, things grew from bad to worse when the region was first occupied by Nazi Germany from 1938 to 1945 and then under Soviet domination from 1948 to 1989. In 1982, author Eva Zidek and her family escaped the communist country. She shares their story in new book, "Our Dream Was Canada: Two Suitcases, Children and a Dog" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"It's a true story of the risk-taking and selflessness of a family whose bonds were tightened by adversity," Zidek explains. "It describes the situation behind the Iron Curtain in the years after the Russian tanks rolled through the streets of Czechoslovakia and border crossing became nearly impossible. The harrowing escape we made was attempted by many of eastern block's citizens, despite the treacherous conditions."

"Our Dream Was Canada" depicts the experiences Zidek's family encountered in their pursuit of personal freedom. In despair over the decline of the Czech environment, they sought a new life in Canada. The book covers their stay in a refugee camp in West Germany, the difficulty of getting to the country of their dreams and their struggle the first year they spent in Canada.

"I want readers to take away knowledge of what life was like behind the Iron Curtain in the 1980s," Zidek writes. "I also want them to see that struggle can help tighten family bonds. With an open heart, one can always find good friends, and with personal courage, freedom."
