Domestic Violence Expert Dr. Ludy Green Provides 'Road Map' For Women in New Guide

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ When it comes to combatting the terror and trauma of domestic abuse, few women in the country have done more than Dr. Ludy Green to educate and empower victims. Dr. Green founded Second Chance Employment Services (SCES), a D.C. nonprofit that trains and empowers woman to reenter the workforce, setting them on the path to financial independence. And now she has written a bookEnding Domestic Violence Captivity: A Guide to Economic Freedomthat analyzes why women stay in abusive relationships and offers real-life solutions to regain control of their lives.

As discussed in her book, Dr. Green believes the key to making a lifelong impact on victims of abuse is employing them in the workforce. By providing women with the necessary skills to earn a living, they will be empowered to fend for themselves and not be dependent on their abuser for financial or emotional support.

"Women need to know the warning signs that their husband or significant other is exhibiting," said Dr. Green. "They have to make a realistic assessment: can I solve this problem, do I need to contact a local resourceor should I develop an exit strategy? Most importantly, victims of domestic abuse need to start making good decisions in their own self-interest and safety."

Dr. Green was instrumental in developing new language for the 2013 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). The VAWA included a landmark provision allocating federal funds for groups providing employment services for victims of domestic violence.

Highly respected as a national spokesperson and frequently honored for her efforts on behalf of victims of abuse, Dr. Green's first exposure to domestic violence came when she volunteered at My Sister's Place, a D.C. shelter, which provided an up close look at how devastating life becomes for victims. An experience with one domestic abuse victim planted the seed that eventually blossomed into Second Chance, the first and only employment agency in the U.S. designed specifically for women in violent relationships.

With Domestic Violence Awareness Month approaching, Dr. Green recognizes the progress made in battling abuse, but calls attention to the still-troubling statistics. One in four women is the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner. And roughly 20% of children report witnessing an assault, proving that domestic violence is very much a family issue.
