Werner Schumann, producer of dozens of award-winning documentaries including the Oscar-nominated "The Klan: A Legacy of Hate in America," present his new memoir, "From Brownshirt to Turtleneck" (published by Lulu).

Schumann was born in 1930 in Germany before Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime took power. He became a Hitler Youth; his father was a dedicated Party and Brownshirt member; his mother kept her opposing beliefs secret. Schumann lived in Berlin through most of World War II as well as some trying postwar years before emigrating to America. In the United States he transformed from a disillusioned youth into an accomplished documentary filmmaker on varied subjects such as history, architecture and medical ethics.

Schumann vividly focuses his unique, revealing story within the historical context of his time. He relays anecdotes from his childhood through adulthood, quoting a character from Scott Turow's "Ordinary Heroes" who says, "Who are we but the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, and believe?"

Both an interesting story and an archetypical immigrant's tale, "From Brownshirt to Turtleneck" allows readers to see the vicissitudes of the life Schumann has experienced. It depicts his disillusionment with the Nazi ideology, his journey to the United States, how he eventually realized his childhood dream of working in the film business and his happy union with a Rabbi's daughter.

Schumann says that everyone leaves a legacy based on the interactions that have influenced others. "From Brownshirt to Turtleneck" adds to that legacy.
