DJERI AND OTHER STORIES is Released

SUNBURY, Australia

Curious about the Aboriginal families living in her hometown, Australian author Sandra M. Mallia began collecting stories of the indigenous people to discover more about their heritage. These collected stories come together in Mallia's new book, "Djeri: And Other Stories" (published by Partridge Singapore).

Mallia's book focuses on native people living and working on the outskirts of Melbourne, Australia. They keep their background a secret for a variety of reasons. Mallia explores the effects this denial of culture has on the various characters featured in "Djeri."

Each short story stars a different character, and each reacts differently to their troubles, but all the characters live within the same community. Mallia believes the problems these characters face will be recognized by other minorities in Australia and beyond.

"Racial intolerance is still prevalent within Australia today, despite the progress that has been made during the last few decades," Mallia says. "The voices of those hidden people who have chosen to keep their heritage secret should be heard."

An excerpt from "Djeri":

"Doesn't really know much about his ancestors, just picked up bits and pieces from his mother. How not so long ago they came from the cold southern lands, dressed in possum-skin cloaks, speaking a language lost when the clans from Scotland cleared the Gippsland bush. He didn't really believe it anyway; after all, he was fair like his mum. She told him that's where he got his name. DJeri, little bird, Jeri for the records."
