Canongate has revealed the new jackets for Michel Faber's The Book of Strange New Things, ahead of the publication of the paperback edition in August 2015.

The stunning new paperback will come in two complementary cover designs, one in gold foil and one in silver. They are the result of another collaboration between illustrator Yehrin Tong and Canongate Art Director Rafi Romaya.

Tong and Romaya won the V&A Book Cover Illustration Award earlier this year for their hardback design of The Book of Strange New Things, which was based on a teardrop composed of intricate geometric patterns. Judges praised it for the way in which it married conceptual depth with commercial and marketing awareness, and embodied the book's themes of love, loss and the fluidity of human relationships. The design was also shortlisted for the Kitschies Inky Tentacle (Cover Art) Award.

The first of the two paperback covers will depict Peter, the protagonist of the book, and the second Bea - his wife and soulmate, with whom he corresponds throughout the novel. Romaya explains:

"After the hardback cover was so well received, we wanted the paperback package to have a similar feel and yet also draw out the relationship between Bea and Peter which forms the core of the novel. Peter and Bea are physically separated for majority of the book, and this is reflected in how they relate to each other. With this in mind, I was immediately drawn to producing two covers - one featuring Bea and the other Peter - simultaneously unifying them through execution and separating them.

The style of illustration has a serene yet other-worldly quality; though the setting is fictional, the emotions are real and it's important to visualise this. The single tear on each face nods to the hardback jacket, but also our very human tendency to cry when words are not enough."

Francis Bickmore, Publishing Director, added, "This is one of the most important and enjoyable novels we have published: an exceptional book from one of the world's most daring talents. In these stunning new designs, we have a package that no one will be able to forget."

The Book of Strange New Things, Faber's first novel in twelve years, was published in hardback in October 2014 to huge critical acclaim. The story of Peter Leigh, a missionary called to go on the journey to spread the word of God to the furthest reaches of the galaxy, it was called "a masterpiece" by David Mitchell, "completely compelling" by Philip Pullman, and "a novel of marvel and wonderment" by Yann Martel. Faber made headlines around the world when he announced it could be his final novel.

The paperback edition will be published on 6th August 2015. Faber will be at the Edinburgh International Book Festival on the 27th Aug at 8.45pm. Tickets are available online at www.edbookfest.co.uk.
