The novel is the third book in the Ambrose Lincoln trilogy of noir suspense thrillers set during Hitler's reign of terror in Europe. Although fiction, the historical elements of the story have been painstakingly researched to ensure a critical measure of authenticity as Lincoln moves with a beautiful but deadly Partisan through the bomb-ravaged countryside of Poland to reach his destination in Germany.

Lincoln has long lived in the shadows of his own existence. He is the victim of the government's top-secret mind-control experiment, developed with hallucinatory drugs and designed to rearrange the landscape of his brain, removing all emotions, including his fear of death.

Such experiments did actually take place during that era as the Army sought to create false identities for key agents, allowing them to work effectively during covert operations without the fear of providing critical military information if ever captured, interrogated, or tortured.

In Poland, then Germany, Lincoln realizes that if the man in the shadows has not lied to him he must find and destroy the most valuable painting in the world. Known as the Night Side of Dark, the work of art has only been seen by one man for centuries, a Jewish art scholar who was executed and buried in the ditches outside his home during the early days of Jewish extermination,

What happened to the painting? Did it exist, or was it only a religious myth passed down since the day a Jewish messiah was nailed to a cross? The painting, if legend holds true, is the German hierarchy's final and only chance to exit the onslaught of a war that is crumbling around their feet. Only one person knows the secret and the truth. She is the art scholar's aging widow, and she has hidden herself away in an insane asylum.

The German Gestapo will pay a fortune to buy the painting or take a man's life to acquire it. They are gambling that Lincoln will be able to find it. They are well aware of his reputation. But, if he succeeds, will Lincoln sell it or destroy it?

Can a man without a memory or a conscience be bought? Or must he, too, pay the ultimate price to protect the ancient shroud's secret and keep the priceless painting from falling into their hands?
