Coaching and healing offers a robust approach to working with illness, trauma and loss. Coaches - executive, life and health - often have to work with serious illness, loss or trauma. Whether coaches have the relevant training or not, life events insert themselves into the lives of individuals working with coaches. The recently published book, Coaching and Healing: Transcending the Illness Narrative, co-authored by ten diverse coaches, articulates a compassionate method for alleviating suffering through skillful coaching. By gently honoring the experience of pain, and bringing awareness to the healing story, coaches have the opportunity to significantly impact clients and reduce suffering.

Coaching and Healing covers the philosophical distinction between healing and curing, the use of healing narratives, a detailed introduction to the Integral Coaching method when applied to healing, and six case studies of real clients who have worked with the principles offered in the book. The most compelling and moving elements of the book are the healing narratives presented by each of the co-authors. These first-person stories bring to life the healing possibilities coaching can access. "As coaches, our presence, our hearts, and our skills are offered in support of healing for those who make the commitment to working with a coach. Our work is to deepen our ability to be present with the full range of the human condition and to skillfully support the emergence of healing," says co-author Reggie Marra.

Key ingredients for working with Coaching and Healing include:

  • Embodying an understanding of the potential sense of 'groundlessness' that illness and loss create
  • Shedding inflated ambitions for the client to get better
  • Engaging the client's competency for healing as well as his or her capacity for healing
  • Attuning to the boundary between coaching and other healing disciplines

"The remarkable individuals who compiled this volume bring their personal experiences, combined wisdom and the insights of their Integral Coaching discipline to distinguish between disease and illness, cure and healing. They point a way to the alchemical transformation of suffering into peace and health," writes Gabor Maté MD, the author of When The Body Says No: The Cost of Hidden Stress.
