STORY CITY, Iowa - Having grown up without a mother, debut author C. N. Christensen is all too familiar with the struggles of growing up in a one-parent household. In "The Kitsune Chronicles," she tells a coming-of-age story about dealing with the resulting feelings of abandonment and mixed emotions through a series of fantasy novels based around the Asian folklore about the fox-"kitsune" in Japanese.

In the first book, "The Kitsune Chronicles: The Feral Guardian" (published by Xlibris), readers are introduced to Audrie Lanes who is just getting to know about her special heritage, a curse passed down from her mother-a mother had abandoned her. She awakens as a kitsune-a mystical fox-and gains the ability to control supernatural elements. To learn of her new abilities, Audrie travels to the Rocky Mountains to live with her maternal family. Apart from learning to control her powers, she also learns how to become a happy adult and let go of her anger, distrust and hatred with the help of her new family.

"Growing up, I had a lot of anger and frustration due to constantly moving from one house to the next and dealt with feelings of abandonment. I always felt alone," said Christensen. "I began this book series, so other teenagers and children who were raised in a one-parent household or by other family or friends could have a relatable character overcoming similar obstacles and emotions."

A nontraditional, coming-of-age story involving Asian folklore in a modern and western setting, "The Kitsune Chronicles: The Feral Guardian" is a breath of fresh air in a fantasy genre that mostly base themselves on Western folklore. Beyond that, Christensen's story means not only to entertain, but also, to impart readers with new wisdom for becoming a happy and successful adult. She also hopes that her story would spark in her readers, an interest in folklore.
