Last spring, Bookworks and the Albuquerque Public Library Foundation launched a new literary series, A Word with Writers, featuring George RR Martin and Diana Gabaldon at a sold-out KiMo Theater. This year, the series features two fiction writers also with New Mexico roots-Mira Jacob & Kirstin Valdez Quade.

Mira Jacob just won an MTV Logo Channel's New Now Next Award for debut fiction for her novel, The Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancing. The book takes place in India, Seattle, and New Mexico and portrays an extended family abroad and as immigrants to the U.S., with all their trials and tribulations. The book garnered rave reviews in People, Entertainment Weekly, O: Oprah Magazine, and from the Associated Press. Publisher's Weekly noted that "[Jacob] has a wonderful flair for recreating the messy sprawl of family life, with all its joy, sadness, frustration, and anger." Random House releases A Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancingin paperback on June 9.

Kirstin Valdez Quade was named a 5 Under 35 writer by the National Book Foundation prior to W.W. Norton publishing her first book, Night at the Fiestas, a book of short stories set in Santa Fe. Night at the Fiestas features the fierce, troubled hearts of Santa Fe, including a deadbeat father of a pregnant teenager, a young man who discovers that his estranged father and a boa constrictor are squatting in his grandmother's empty house, and a lonely retiree new to Santa Fe who becomes obsessed with her housekeeper, among other colorful characters in these poignant stories of family life. Quade's work has appeared nationally inThe New Yorker, Narrative, The Best American Short Stories, and The O. Henry Prize Stories. A former Stegner Fellow at Stanford, she now teaches at the University of Michigan.

Tickets to A Word With Writers are $20 for priority, front row-seating and signing line preference, and $7 for general admission. Tickets will be available through the KiMo Theater ticketing, at 421 Central, or online at kimotickets.com. All proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Albuquerque Public Library Foundation.
