A book written by senior nursing students, "Nursing is Caring" (published by iUniverse) is a collection of 81 essays about inspiring patients who made them realize they were in the right profession. Beverly Wheeler, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, a clinical assistant professor in the School of Nursing at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, set the assignment to help her students reflect on the true meaning of nursing.

"My senior students have to write a short article of a patient they have had during nursing school who inspired them and made them realize they are in the right profession," Wheeler explains. "I wanted other people to read what I was reading."

Written from the heart, these true-life essays show that caring for people - not just patients - is at the heart of nursing. They reflect on the critical role nurses play in helping families start the healing process; they do more than just fulfill orders or draw blood.

By sharing her student's work, Wheeler hopes those thinking about entering the field or those simply interested in learning more about it will come to see that "Nursing is much more than just pushing pills and giving shots."

All royalties from this book will be donated to the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Nursing Scholarship Fund.
