SALEM, Ore.

High altitudes can harm in more ways than one.

In The Adralack Crack on Mt. Baker, author Beauford E. Averette tells the adventurous tale of four university professors' winter climb of Mt. Baker in rural Washington. After coming upon an unexpected cave-in of a lava tunnel and subsequent avalanche, the men seek shelter in a shallow rock overhang. Later naming the small cave the "Adralack Crack," the professors' lives forever change after mysteriously losing one of their companions within the crack and being exposed to its paranormal effects.

"I read a book on mountain climbing and wondered how it could be made more exciting," Averette said. "Then the characters came alive in my imagination and wanted me to tell their story."

Far from any ordinary mountain climbing story, The Adralack Crack on Mt. Baker weaves telepathy, extraterrestrials, teleportation, theft, love, sex and friendship within its pages.

"The book is meant to cause you to live vicariously though the characters," Averette said. "To feel the love, hate and fear they feel."
