Author and theory of knowledge instructor Ayman Al Zanoun aims to help students and educators start meaningful conversations about knowledge and what makes up a good education in his new book, "Knowledge According to My Gardener: 50 Stories and Crosswords to Start TOK Conversations" (published by Lulu).

The theory of knowledge, commonly known as epistemology in universities, is a study hall in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Discussions surrounding the theory include how to think, rather than what to think, and how to teach this difference to students. Al Zanoun has been teaching this philosophy for 20 years.

Organized into 50 stories and word puzzles, "Knowledge According to My Gardener" serves as an introductory guide to the theory of knowledge for new students. Each story follows a teacher struggling to communicate with the students and a gardener, who offers sage advice. The stories integrate knowledge from Plato, Rorty and many other philosophers.

The word puzzles are meant to challenge readers and push them to think creatively. With his book, Al Zanoun hopes to generate more conversations about knowledge and encourage students to think for themselves.

An excerpt from "Knowledge According to My Gardener":

"Use the fifty stories and crosswords in this book to start conversations about knowledge. Remember that TOK is about how to think not what to think. Allow participants to use whatever they want: mobile phones, Internet, library, calls to experts, and so on."
