Author Art Dickerson was an engineer and general manager of a research establishment for 32 years. Following this he taught electrical engineering at Cal Poly. He then ran his own engineering consultation company for 34 years. Though his team's projects evolved, he says the hindrances of technology remained the same: politics, greed and religious extremism.

Dickerson draws from the pages of his own life and history in his new memoir, "Getting To Now: 67 Years of Technology Evolution" (published by Trafford Publishing), in which he chronicles the evolution of technology and the forces holding back its services to mankind.

Beginning with the year 1941 and ending in 2008, "Getting To Now" takes a look at technology's role in the lives of civilization, both at large and in the home. While technology is often implemented in service roles for people, Dickerson says it is never fully-utilized. He blames politics, religious extremism and greed for this, citing numerous cases of their hindrance throughout his book.

Dickerson hopes readers will leave his book with a better understanding of technology's evolution and place in the home, as well as society's ability to shape it. By making readers aware of the sway greed, politics and religion have over technology, Dickerson hopes to play a role in unlocking technology's potential.
