Alma Wynelle Deese's KENTUCKY'S FIRST ASYLUM to be Displayed at 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair

Author and former psychologist Alma Wynelle Deese first took readers through Kentucky's first asylum in 2012 with the release of her book, "Kentucky's First Asylum: A Saga of the People and Practices" (published by iUniverse). She now hopes to take even more readers there through a new marketing push, which includes her book's appearance at several events, including the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair.

Deese often asks herself, "Could the downfall of mental health care in America be caused by the same psychological stigma given to the mentally ill patients?" She looks for the answer to this question in "Kentucky's First Asylum," in which she explores past and current issues facing America's mental health system by dissecting the inner workings of the Eastern Kentucky Asylum.

Using historical data, Deese presents a fictionalized narrative to explore the institution's history from 1817 to the 1990s - including a chapter dedicated to 1906, a pivotal year for the asylum involving four employees charged with the murder of a patient and a political climate that would shape mental health for the foreseeable future.

"Kentucky's First Asylum" provides historical understanding of one early asylum that eventually became a state hospital. Deese hopes her book provides broader context for understanding the current mental health system.

Alma Wynelle Deese graduated from Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. She then completed her graduate studies at the University of Mississippi Graduate School. She worked as a psychologist at several institutions, including 27 years at Eastern State Hospital. She is the author of several books. Now retired, she lives in St. Petersburg, Florida.
