More than 200 million people worldwide were without a job after the 2007-2008 financial and economic crisis, according to the International Labour Organization. In times of economic distress, author Vincent Li believes understanding the meaning of life is essential to surviving hardship.

Li's new novel, "A Person's True Vocation," documents five persons' career-related struggles, such as losing their jobs and having to transfer to a new country, in Hong Kong and Indonesia after a global financial storm.

But as the characters begin to find ways to recover, they learn that their genuine responsibility is to discover who they really are.

"Finding the way to become oneself requires finding the way to live with no regrets despite challenging circumstances," Li said. "Life is full of paradoxes."
