Road Less Traveled Productions (RLTP) today announced it is accepting applications for the 2014 Emanuel Fried New Play Workshop (NPW). The professionally run, non-profit, theatre company encourages Western New York (WNY) writers to visit its website for information on participation in the annual program, which will launch its 2014 iteration in March.

Named for WNY's playwright laureate, Emanuel "Manny" Fried, the NPW supports the development of original dramatic works by local playwrights. Founded by RLTP Literary Director Jon Elston in 2004, and under the supervision of Elston and Workshop Director Kyle LoConti since 2009, playwrights receive peer support during the composition and revision of their original plays over a nine-month period. RLTP then presents development readings of these new plays to the public, "directed by and featuring some of WNY's finest theatrical talent," according to Elston.

Plays developed in the NPW and produced by RLTP include Darryl Schneider's Clean Break, Ibn Shabazz's Insidious, Annette Daniels-Taylor's A Little Bit Of Paradise, and Donna Hoke's Seeds--all Artvoice Artie Award winners in the Outstanding New Play category. Several plays developed in the NPW also have been produced by other WNY theatre companies, including Subversive Theatre Collective, Theatre Jugend, and Ujima. And, a handful of NPW-developed and RLTP-produced plays have gone on to production outside of WNY, around the nation.

"The New Play Workshop has grown into a key institution within WNY's theatre industry," Elston asserted. "We don't develop plays just for RLTP. We support WNY's playwrights as they develop their work for the world, and as they develop their playwrighting skills." And in doing so, he added, the NPW "nurtures WNY's prodigious community of playwrights!"

Applications to the 2014 Emanuel Fried New Play Workshop will be accepted through Monday, January 6th, 2014; there is no application fee. More information about how to apply is available at http://roadlesstraveledproductions.org/programs/new-play-workshop/.
